On a specially made truck and trailer, a retired Boeing 737 was transported from Karachi, the commercial centre of Pakistan, to Hyderabad. In around two and a half hours, the 154-kilometer overland trip was completed.
The infrequent occurrence brought to mind a comparable incident in September when three Boeing 777s were driven across the deserts of Saudi Arabia.
According to Hummayun Khalid, who was in charge of the transfer, the 40-ton, 110-foot jet’s wings and tail were disassembled before it was loaded onto the trailer and will be transported separately.
The aeroplane will be used to train airport firemen after it has been put back together at Hyderabad’s Civil Aviation Training Institute.
The transport convoy created traffic jams on the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway even though it wasn’t officially blocked.
