ISLAMABAD: The government has taken decisive action against the spread of misinformation and anti-state activities by blocking 86,000 SIM cards, Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi informed the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Government Responds to Fake News Concerns
During a call-to-attention notice raised by Asiya Naz Tanoli regarding the proliferation of fake news on social media, Mehdi explained the government’s strategy to curb misinformation. He acknowledged that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was temporarily blocked to address the issue and highlighted the government’s efforts to tackle the problem comprehensively.
Stricter Regulations and VPN Restrictions
Mehdi disclosed that amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are forthcoming to strengthen legal frameworks against fake news. He also confirmed restrictions on VPN usage as part of efforts to control the dissemination of misinformation.
“A task force has been formed under the Prime Minister’s directive, and awareness campaigns are being conducted in educational institutions, including universities, colleges, and schools,” Mehdi said.
Pakistan’s Approach vs. Global Practices
Comparing Pakistan’s approach to international standards, Mehdi remarked that while other countries prioritize freedom of expression, Pakistan has placed significant emphasis on combating fake news. He acknowledged the global challenges in addressing misinformation but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to mitigating its impact.
Enhanced Cybercrime Measures
In related developments, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has been granted new authority to address offenses on social media. A notification issued by the Ministry of IT announced the annulment of the National Cybercrimes and Investigation Agency’s rules, transferring its powers back to the FIA Cybercrime Wing.
Conclusion
The government’s proactive measures against misinformation and anti-state activities demonstrate its resolve to maintain national security and curb fake news. With amendments to electronic crime laws, stricter VPN controls, and an empowered FIA Cybercrime Wing, Pakistan aims to address these challenges while balancing the need for freedom of expression and public accountability.
